
I watched
American Idol
last night—along with the rest of the country. I used to rebel against watching what everyone else was watching, or reading what everyone else was reading, or listening to what everyone else was listening to. I guess I've mellowed over the years. Now I figure maybe the reason something is popular is because it's good. Sort of like cliches. As an editor I've always mocked phrases like "soul mate" and "in the blink of an eye" and "walking closer with God." But the older I get, the more I understand why these phrases are overused. They may not be original or "fresh," but they communicate.
